10/6/2013 Awards Night
Chairman’s Address
First of all many thanks for everyone who has attended tonights event, I know Monday night isn’t ideal but when a club our size needs a place big enough to hold all the players and all the supporting parents at a cost that is not going to cripple us financially we sometimes have to take what we can.
When I joined Oadby and Wigston 10 years ago, the club was playing and training at Guthlaxton College and South Wigston High School, we had no home to call our own, and about 50 players playing in 2 year age bands, since then we are the only club in the Leicestershire League to field teams at every age and have two ladies teams that compete in the Leicestershire Womens League and the East Midlands Counties League, we also make an appearance in the Women’s FA Cup, and as I said to the girls last year who played in this put it on your CV it will be a big plus with many employers when you eventually go looking for a job.
The club is run solely by volunteers and my special thanks go out to the people who make this club tick like clockwork, from Mick and Lesley Batchelor who supply the teas and coffees on a Saturday and Sunday morning as well as being club handyman and club secretary, to Adrian Tugby the treasurer, who keeps the accounts up to date to ensure we have funds available to spend on quality kit and equipment, and to Nigel Cunniffe who takes and produces the minutes each committee meeting. I mention these four in particular as all of their daughters/granddaughters left the club a number of seasons ago and yet still they remain.
It has been an exciting year, our Academy goes from strength to strength with Nigel Downes supported by Beth Chamberlain training the next generation of girls, to follow in your footsteps.
The inclusive football gets bigger every session, and if you’ve forgotten the reason why sport is so inspiring come and watch these kids train they will inspire you.
We are also attempting to bring a philosophy of football to the club to try and ensure we develop not only good players but an attractive style of football that is good to watch, and have a new groundsman who has ensured we have pitches to match that style of football.
Plans to redevelop the facility are still ongoing, but we are restricted by the Councils inability to make decisions, if you come across the Councillors on your travels give them a nudge and tell them what good goes on at our club.
The philosophy of this club first and foremost has always been player development, when your daughter comes to this club we want her to grow in confidence we want her to be able to work in a team environment and we want her to know that if she works hard she will be successful. If she is not getting that experience speak to us, and we will find out how we can make it better.
Big thank you for tonight goes to Andrew Scott who has put together the venue the presentation, the trophies and our special guest, single handed. I know a lot that goes on in our club that you don’t see is instigated and carried out by Andrew and I don’t think I will be out of order in asking for a bit of appreciation for Andrew.
We are always looking for volunteers, you don’t have to put the hours in that the committee members or managers do, an hour here or there often can make a difference, a word in your employers ear about sponsorship, an hour fixing the broken toilet in the clubhouse or helping out on tournament days, this is the only commitment we ask for, just let us know you are willing and we will find you a task.
Our AGM takes place on Wednesday the 19th June at the Meadows Sports Ground with a 7.00pm start, it would be nice to see some of you there.
Finally one very special mention goes to a very special member of the Club, without whom none of what we have today would have happened. When approached back in 1997 by a group of girls who wanted to play football, not only did he help them play, he helped form the league that we all play in today. Graham as you will see is now stepping down from running a side, to give a bit of time to family life, however don’t be surprised to see him on the touchline next season still supporting the girls in some form.
We don’t like losing people who have dedicated a large part of the life to the club so at the AGM I propose to create a new position in the club, that of President and hope that Graham Randon or Mr Oadby and Wigston as he is better known will do the honour of accepting that position.
I personally get a lot of enjoyment seeing the smiles on faces when they win, the grumpiness when they lose and the spirit of togetherness when a player is being kicked by the opposition or misses a crucial penalty, to all managers remember why we are doing this it is not for our fulfilment, we have had our time, it is for theirs, treat every child like you would like your own child treated and remember at the end of the day the main reason the girls come to football is to hang out with their mates keep fit and to enjoy themselves, please try and remember this.
Thanks
Adrian Kemp Chairman
